The Haynesville Shale formation is a geologic formation that spreads over North Eastern Texas, North Western Louisiana, and Southern Arkansas with the largest part being located in Louisiana. The play is mostly a Natural Gas Play and lies at depths of 10,500 to 13,000 feet below the surface and covers an area of roughly 9000 square miles. The layer where the gas lies is approximately 200 to 300 feet thick. The Haynesville play initially was thought to be the largest natural gas play in the lower 48 states estimated at 250 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Later numbers estimated it at 75 trillion cubic feet which puts it second to only the Marcellus Shale.
